Adia, in Mrs. Yollis's 3rd grade class

Adia is blogging about her day learning about Japan. She was taught how to make sushi, was able to try on an authentic japanese Kimono dress and leaned several things about their culture. She also learned so very interesting facts about Japanese women and their hair. They pull their hair back tightly at night so the following morning they do not have to brush it, a big time saver. Also the hairpiece that many japanese women wear can double as a weapon. It has sharp edges on purpose, so in case of danger the women are able to protect themselves.

Family Blogging Month is Mrs. Yollis' Class

I think that family blogging month was a great idea. It really gets the parents involved and shows them what all their child is learning. Also the parents were blogging during this time, it is fun for a child to be able to do things with their parents.

Talent Show: Mr. Neal

For the talent show Mr. Neal played the guitar and sang. It was a very good performance. I enjoyed watching it, he is very talented.

Room 8 at Melville Int School

The video that I watched on this blog was about the schools sports teams. The video was great and very professional. It highlighted many of the good plays and looked like it took a good amount of time to put together. They have several sports teams at this school, and i have never heard of several of the sports until I visited this blog. One of the unknown sports looked a lot like soccer, except they could touch the ball with their hands. The also have a lacrosse team, which I found interesting. Because in this area you usually only see lacrosse offered at the college level.

This blog post takes you step by step through making your blog. The steps that he goes through make it very easy to set up and manage a blog. I will use many of his tips when I create my own class blog. He makes the statement "If you can e-mail, then you can blog." Every detail about starting a blog was mention, if anyone was interested in setting one up this is the blogger to visit.

This website will be very useful to me and and my teaching career. When you first access the website their are eight options for you to chose from. Course of study, web links, lesson plans, search, ALEXville, person workspace, professional learning and podcast treasury. I found this site very helpful. It takes your area of literacy, then the grade level and generates lesson plans for you from their. I think the lesson plan option will be most helpful for me. You can make your own, find already made ones or search by subject and grade level.

Special Metaphor Assignment (Blog Post #14)

I didn't catch the metaphor the first time I read the blog post. But after re-reading I understood. I should have just read a little closer the first time I read the assignment. If I had, I would have caught it the first time. I think it is good to use metaphor's. I do sometimes get irritated with metaphors, I also find myself thinking "Just say what you want, stop beating around the bush." But I also agree that they really help you look at things differently and can broaden your understanding of many things. There are metaphors everywhere. I think TV commercials are a good example. Many of them do not come right out and tell you the point. You have to watch the whole thing to figure it out. I guess thats their way to keep you watching.

Final Report on PLN

I used Netvibes.com to create my PLN. It has really helped me to stay organized this semester. On my PLN I have my social networking sites, sites I commonly use for EDM 310 and sites I use for other classes.

Blog Assignment #12

Find an educational website that you one day plan to use in your classroom. This should be a site that helps your students learn, not a site that gives you (the teacher)ideas. Once you find your website, in a blog post add a link to the site and a summary of how this site will help your students.

Ex: I chose www.yourchildlearns.com for my website. I plan on being a future history teacher, and a big part of history is geography. If my students are learning about a particular region I want them to know where it is. On this website the students can use interactive map puzzles to help them remember where all of the different country's are located. Also if we are learning about the U.S. map puzzles are also available to help them learn where the states are located.

Progress Report on Final Project

For our final project we are using the same group that we were assigned to at the beginning of the semester. We have done all of our group projects together. We are in the process of brainstorming ideas for our final project.

Teaching your dog how to walk on a leash/Project 14

What you will need

1. Your dog
2. A dog leash
3. A box of dog treats and one of your dog's favorite toys


Teaching your dog how to walk on a leash

1. Put your dog on the leash, if they are not used to the leash you may want to play with him/her a little first to get them used to it.
2. Take your dog into a large open area with nothing to block their walking path. I prefer to use a long hallway. But outside in the yard is just as good, as long as their is nothing to distract your dog.
3. Once you are ready to begin training your dog, make sure he/she is close to your side and calm.
4. Hold the leash in one hand and the box of treats, or the toy, in the other hand. Hold the treats just above the dogs line of sight, where they have to look up just a little. One you have their attention begin walking. While you walk continue to hold the treats steady. This should keep their attention, so that they are concentrating on following the treats instead of running around. Once you feel like your dog has walked a good distance on the leash, stop and give them a treat and praise them.
5. After you have practiced with this technique for several days, start trying to walk them on the leash without something to keep the concentration. If they are successful, reward them.

I really enjoyed reading this post, because I like so many other college students can not pay attention in class. Even for the students who do manage to pay close attention during two hour lectures, it is so difficult to retain that much information. So for us college students who doze off during lectures, we can not expect our students to stay awake if our class is just as boring. I want my class room to be the one that the students think of as fun. I want my students to learn and be successful, but I also want them to enjoy their time in my classroom.

As for Dan Brown I agree that standardized testing can harm a students education. Growing up I can not tell you how many times I heard my mother complain that I was only learning what was going to be on those tests and nothing else. When you have a test that determines wether or not you will keep your job as a new teacher, you do what ever it takes to make sure your students make good grades on it. Today teachers spend so much time teaching what will be on those tests, that little other is covered.

Little Kids...Big Potential

Ms.Cassidy's first grade class is where I want my children to learn. These kids are learning how to do so much at a young age. My favorite thing about Ms. Cassidy's approach to teach children how to blog and use the internet are her safety rules. She only lets the children post their first name, no last names. Also if their are any pictures posted they are not to have the child's name attached to them. These are great ways to teach children how to use these tools safely. I also like how she encourages her students to only leave positive comments on others blogs, as to not hurt anyone's feelings. I think that this is such a great opportunity for these children and wish that more young children had these same chances.

Jenna Bently's Blog

The blog posts that I commented on were both about Jenna Bently's new hobby of photography. She is participating in a new activty called the daily project. The requires her to take a daily objective and taked pictures of what that objective means to her. I think that this project is a great way to help aspiring photographers use their talents and learn new ways and techniques of capturing an image. I am using a photographer to take my engagement photos who takes very off the wall and abstract objects and makes them beautiful. I mentioned this to Jenna and hopefully that will give her even more photography ideas.

Kobe is a student at PT England school. I comment on his blog post about images. His class was learning how to add images as links to websites on their blogs. Kobe's image was a character from the video game Assassins Creed.

Room 8 at Melville Int. School
On this blog their was a video of a sports match between their school and another school. I found this video very interesting because I have never heard of this sport and was intrigued to watch it being played.

What I've Learned This Year



I hope to learn as much as I can in my first years of teaching. I think many of us have the mindset that we will teach our own way. But I agree that if we try to make it all about us then our student will not get the learning experience they deserve. I enjoyed reading this blog post and hope to learn from my students when I become a teacher also.

Smart Board Project

Blog Assignment #7

This was a very inspirational speech, given by a really incredible person. This speech was all about how to achieve your childhood dreams. It started out with listing his childhood dream and telling you how he achieved those dreams. He achieved all of his dreams, even if some of them were achieved a little different than he may have expected. He also talked about helping others achieve their dreams. As a virtual reality professor he taught students how to reach new heights in this field. But he did not take all the credit for himself, he acknowledged all of the people that helped him along the way. This speech is really hard to explain because it has so many elements, it is like watching a good movie that makes you feel good at the end. It is an amazing talk and everyone should take the time to watch it, because it can really effect the way that you set out to achieve your dreams and how you can help others achieve their dreams also.

I was assigned to comment on Bill Ferriter's blog, he is a 6th grade language arts teacher in North Carolina. He has some very strong opinions on some very interesting topics. The first post I commented on was about using social networking in schools. He chose ten responses, five negative and five positive, that people gave in response to their opinion about social networking. I enjoyed seeing the different opinions of people. I think that social networking is a great tool for learning, but as with everything, students may find a way to abuse it. The next post that I commented on was about interactive white boards. He does not like IWB's. I said that I have not used one yet so I can not have to much of an opinion. But I said that if a teacher can enhance a students learning experience then the IWB's are a good initiative.

I commented on a blog post by Rachel. She was explaining how measurements can be fun. She gave the definition of capacity and said that her favorite form of capacity measurement was gallons. She put a great picture on her post that really showed how easy measurements can be. The definition of capacity that she chose was also easy to understand. I told her that my favorite form of capacity measurement was cups, because I understand capacity measurements best when I start with a smaller amount.

Senolita and Mary read the book "Ollie's Bubble Bother". They put in stories of their own as they went through the story. These girls did a great job, and the stories that they added on their own were really entertaining.

Blog Assignment #6

The Networked Student
This video is a great way to show how students should be learning. This method is so much better than giving a student a text book that they will never open. With this method of learning they are not only connecting with others, but they are going to remember what they learn. With this method, where they have to go and find the information that they are looking for, the student will learn much more than if he/she would if they read 3 chapters in a textbook. There are some textbooks that are easier to understand, but most of them are complicated and boring and students want nothing to do with them. So where does the teacher come in if the student is finding all of the information on their own? We have to teach our students how to find reliable sources, and what the difference is between reliable and unreliable sources. And who are they doing this work for if they don't get a grade? Incentives are the most important part of this process. What is the students incentive to blog, search for scholarly articles and let his findings be known to others? The incentive is their grade. But by making students learn this way we are teaching them skills that they will have long after they leave our classroom.

A 7th Graders PLN

The video that this 7th grader put together is outstanding. And the fact that she as a 7th grader already knows so much about what technology has to offer shows just how important it is that we be technologically literate teachers. This way of teaching is showing children how to be organized and independent thinkers.
